A Monumental Night
Last night was monumental: for Democrats, for the 31 million Americans currently uninsured, and for this great nation. As Obama put it in his address to House Democrats on Saturday, this is “the single most important step that we have taken on health care since Medicare.”
The legislation is, moreover, here to stay. As Yglesias explains, even if “they won every single Democratic-held seat that’s up in 2010, and held on to Ohio, New Hampshire, and Missouri” the Republicans would be “up to 59 Senators—far, far short of the 67 you’d need” to repeal the bill.
Here is what Yglesias’ point looks like on a map (lifted from his post):
The Republican smear campaign has failed, and it looks as though fear will “strike out” again this fall (to paraphrase Krugman). Three cheers!
