I agree, the military should be on the table. I say we start closing all those European bases and the ones in Korea and Japan. They have been free riding on US taxpayers for far too long.
The “defense umbrella” has turned out to be an abject lesson on how underwriting putative “allies” ends up effectively being a subsidy of r/d for future competitors. Japan and Korea are the biggest cases in point. But military spending pays, if you’re in the right place at the right time. That was the whole point; with the exception of the Cuban missile affair, where Kruschev’s atheism saved us, we went out of our way *not* to go head on with the USSR.
Mutual disarmament is the solution I would have preferred.
