The Decline and Fall of M. Night Shyamalan

July 21, 2010

Via Marginal Revolution:

I lost interest about midway through Lady in the Water, and haven’t bothered with any of Shyamalan’s subsequent work. Does anyone want to put up a defense?

I enjoy graphical representations to display what most everybody suspects. I’d be curious to see what the box office dollars graph would look like replacing the Rotten Tomatoes Rating and see if it would prove that a name can sell a movie more than what people who see movies for a living think.

Chris, thanks for the comment! I did a quick search for Shyamalan film box office data, and found a breakdown of first weekend and total gross numbers here:

The Happening and Lady in the Water did as poorly at the box office as they did with the critics. Airbender, on the other hand, has done exceedingly well, despite abysmal reviews.

No. You pretty well covered it. 😉
